Dr. Irsalan Cockerill, Ph.D.

Biocompatibility Engineer at Medtronic
Experience

Medtronic (contracted through Artech)

Biocompatibility Engineer / November, 2021Present

I develop biocompatibility strategies for EU MDR and material/process/sterilization changes within a risk management framework that are compliant to ISO 10993. I serve as the subject matter expert for biocompatibility with cross-functional teams. I coordinate testing with CROs and review, interpret, and disseminate test data to key stakeholders. I also compose biological plans/reports, technical memoranda for regulatory submissions.

University of North Texas

Graduate Research Assistant / September, 2017February, 2021

I developed bioresorbable Zn-based alloys for cardiovascular stents and porous bioscaffolds for orthopedics. I extensively characterized the materials using (but not limited to) AFM, SEM, XRD, profilometry, contact angle, micro-CT, electrochemistry, degradation studies, mechanical tests, and tested their biocompatibility in vitro using a multitude of tests ranging from cytotoxicity to hemocompatibilty and amplification of osteogenesis-related genes using RT-PCR, which led to publishing my research in high impact journals. I also mentored undergraduate students and collaborated with graduate students. In just 3.5 years I published 10 scientific papers!

Graduate Teaching Assistant / September, 2017December, 2020

I taught fundamentals of circuit design, analysis, and troubleshooting to a group of ~ 20 students. I instructed students on how to use engineering software such as MATLAB, LabView, and Multisim and their associated hardware (Arduino, breadboard, oscilloscope, National Instruments I/O device). I graded papers and guided students in their projects.

University of Texas at Arlington

Postdoctoral Researcher / February, 2021November, 2021

I synthesized polymer-based bioactive adhesives for early vaginal wall detachment and pelvic organ prolapse. I extensively characterized the polymer materials using (but not limited to) SEM, degradation assays, mechanical tests, and performed in vitro and in vivo experiments to assess their biocompatibility.

Wilson N Jones Regional Medical Center

Biomedical Engineer / July, 2016July, 2017

I engaged healthcare professionals for training of medical equipment and acquisitions of new technologies or renewal of contracts on OEM services. Additionally, I managed and repaired all medical equipment in the hospital and surrounding clinics, making field service calls as necessary. I worked closely with healthcare professionals to document and resolved complaints on medical devices to ensure functionality and workability.

About
I am an accomplished scientist/engineer with a Ph.D in materials science/biomedical engineering, 10 publications in just 3 years, and 7+ years of academia and industry experience. I have successfully developed biocompatibility strategies for EU MDR and responded to deficiencies from notified bodies. I am very knowledgeable of (but not limited to) disease states, medical devices, toxicology, chemical characterization, design controls, change control, and regulatory submissions. I have also worked on the front lines with healthcare professionals in clinical settings, providing training and troubleshooting medical devices. I am a teacher at heart and enjoy making powerful educational content to teach complex scientific content in a simplified manner to those both inside and outside the scientific community. I am seeking opportunities to use my expertise in a dynamic team committed to advancing medicine and healthcare for the benefits of patients worldwide! Most importantly, I am a man of faith, a husband, and father to three kiddos.
