About

Liam Heaney is a highly qualified, experienced, and award-winning scientist with a strong background in applying analytical chemistry (mass spectrometry) to research in sports science, nutrition, physiology, and health. He is the Director of the Mass Sportrometry laboratory based in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, UK. He earned his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Loughborough University in 2016, after completing his MSc in Exercise Physiology and BSc in Sport & Exercise Sciences at the same institution. Liam has a passion for understanding the chemical makeup of biological samples and how this relates to physiological function. Liam's academic career has seen him hold various positions at Loughborough University. He has also been a DAAD Research Scholar at the German Sport University Cologne, where he conducted research in the field of sports anti-doping science. Prior to his academic career, Liam worked as a Research Associate and Research Assistant at the University of Leicester where he developed, validated, and applied mass spectrometry-based methods for biomarkers in cardiovascular diseases. Liam's expertise in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry has been recognized through numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at international conferences, as well as being voted as one of the Top 40 under 40 Most Influential Scientists by The Analytical Scientist magazine.
