Gavin Engel holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), augmented by study abroad at Konstfack (Stockholm, Sweden). He has made significant contributions at Converse (Nike inc.), progressing through Footwear Design roles towards Senior Sustainability Innovator and ultimately Manager Innovation Global. As a multi-disciplinary artist and creative he approaches design as a process for converging purpose, beauty and story.

Directors sketch plus conversation carried thru to finished product. Achieved 50% Margin target by harmonizing modern and classic icon DNA into TN at 150 Retail. Designed 6+ factory-made innovation samples across Lifestyle Basketball and Skate - translating Leadership direction into provocative design concepts via research sketch AI and 3D - driving communication and progress with product development engineering and factory-side technical innovation team plus external vendors suppliers. Readied Converse x Zellerfeld partnership and 3D footwear models for senior leadership approval on short timeline by communicating with Zellerfeld and Nike teams and 3D-modeling key silhouettes for 3D-print production. Enabled Product Creation Leaders to integrate Nike technology and brief innovative products by building multi-year Innovation Roadmap and presenting at Quarterly Product Leadership meetings. Enhanced connectivity between Converse and Nike Innovation teams carried visibility to new tech back to Converse by building relationships on-site at Nike WHQ. Mentored self-sufficiency professional contribution and self-confidence of Designer II direct-report by up-skilling from accessories design to footwear design skillset over 1.5 years. Delivered 2x Skate Durability screenprint treatment for canvas and suede uppers at less than 1 FOB cost increase. Spearheaded new rubber outsole compound 10% grip benefit on wet dry hardcourt surface in lab test with 0 cost increase and 10% carbon benefit for indoor peak performance basketball. Senior Sustainability Innovator (Design) / January, 2022December, 2024

Energized relationship with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander by designing and crafting impactful prototypes for SHAI 001. Designed crafted luxury Made In Italy Chuck Taylors using premium materials and manufacturing methods regional supply chains embedded sustainability and circularity. Advanced mold-undercuts and design options by inventing interchangeable outsoles (patent-pending) for Chuck Taylor provoking conversation on consumer experience new revenue models and circularity. Published in FastCompany and Boston Globe for designing and making footwear concept prototypes at Converse Concept Creation sample lab. Landed Nike rubber cushioning tech in 2 pro skate models at 12% Peak G benefit and 0 cost increase by assisting design of rubber swatches for impact tests drawing 2D3D cupsole blueprints and presentation assets. Readied-for-scale post-consumer repurposed denim into Chuck Taylors by working closely with external vendor and factory-side technical team in addressing material testing RSL and supply chain concerns managing colorfastness cost and lead time validating 3rd-Party LCA with Nike Sustainability. Carbon-scored key footwear models and designed visual readouts learning Nike Sustainability targets scoring methods. Reported to Vice President of Innovation (currently VP of Brand Marketing) Brandon Avery.

Designer II Innovation (Design) / January, 2015December, 2022

Invented and developed Reflective Felt (patented). Designed and prototyped head-to-toe collection: footwear apparel and accessories highlighting the new material. Garnered 1 million+ Instagram impressions for Brand Heat by expanding Nike Space Hippie and Converse Renew leading design of All Star Crater and All Star Crater Knit showing novelty and comfort. Published in Nike inc. FY2023 Impact Report for inspiring and developing Max Grind 40 Rubber (equal performance 0 cost increase 40% carbon benefit) for use by A-Cold-Wall Rick Owens Sky High Farms Converse Outdoor and Converse-By-You Custom. Saved 100K+ in FSR tooling costs by designing 3D-modeling TPU Shield and lacing system for evolution of BB Shift 1.0 into BB Shift CX 2.0 keeping freshness in basketball line by re-using midsole and outsole.

Designed and developed first-ever Nike Flyknit for Converse Chuck Taylor opening new chapter of strategically sharing tech between brands. Diversified product offering beyond Core Chuck Famous Four details in close collaboration with PLM and Dev teams by designing Converse Fulton and Converse Quantum models. Catalyzed internal speaker series on sustainability and circularity collaborating with Supply Chain Director which hosted 6 external speakers in 2 years influencing and preceding Nike's Move to Zero movement. Expanded Chuck franchise toward hoops and outdoor for males including Converse Asylum and Tekoa Boot.
