Sleep and Circadian Rhythms

About

Dr. Shadab A. Rahman is the Director of Sleep, Circadian and Behavioral Health Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and co-directs the RHYME Research Center at BIDMC Pscyhiatry. He also leads the Chrono-Enlight Research Program and serves in the Division of Sleep and Circadian Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research integrates mechanistic human sleep and circadian physiology with translational interventions, focusing on how sleep, circadian rhythms, light exposure, and behavioral timing influence cognition, metabolism, and women’s health. His early work helped establish that altering the spectral composition of artificial light at night can reduce adverse physiological effects, leading to patented technologies and subsequent applications in lighting design. He has also demonstrated that the human circadian system can respond to extremely brief nighttime light exposures and has characterized distinct physiological pathways underlying melatonin suppression and circadian phase resetting in humans. Dr. Rahman’s work has informed sleep- and circadian-informed lighting interventions tested in healthcare, workplace, residential, and space-mission related environments. His research also examines peripheral metabolic rhythms, showing how meal timing regulates circadian patterns in lipids and hepatic physiology and how mistimed eating can disrupt metabolic function. His research program also includes women’s health, including reproductive hormone regulation, pregnancy and menopause, and menopause related sleep disruption and its impact on neurobehavioral and cardiometabolic outcomes. Across these areas, his work bridges fundamental circadian biology, clinical investigation, mathematical and physiological modeling, and real-world implementation to develop actionable strategies for improving human health. <br>
