About
I am the Co-Founder of the Growth Mindset
Institute (GMI), an organisation dedicated to
fostering high-performance cultures that are
innovative, inclusive, diverse, and supportive
across the education, business, and government
sectors, alongside John Rives. Our core focus
is on leveraging a growth mindset for
leadership development, behavioural change,
and organisational culture. We continually
invest in research and development (R&D)
to advance our knowledge and expertise. My
collaboration with Professor Carol Dweck of
Stanford University has been instrumental in
translating academic research on growth
mindset into practical, impactful
applications. Prior to establishing GMI, I
served as the CEO of the de Bono Institute,
working closely with Dr Edward de Bono, the
creator of the "Six Thinking Hats" and
"Lateral Thinking" methodologies. In that
role, I led substantial consulting and
research projects aimed at enhancing
creativity and innovation in educational and
corporate environments. I regularly speak at
international forums and conferences,
including co-presenting with Dr Edward de Bono
at the United Nations, where we discuss the
significance of creative thinking for global
development. I have also presented alongside
Professor Carol Dweck at numerous conferences
and was featured in the documentary "Rewire
Your Brain: Tod Sampson on Creativity." My
contributions to growth mindset theory and
practice have been recognised in several
academic and professional publications.
Notably, I coined the term "false growth
mindset," identifying a critical pitfall where
growth mindset theory was superficially
applied, focusing merely on effort without
integrating effective strategies, mentorship,
and genuine learning behaviours (Dweck, 2016;
Barger et al., 2022). Professor Dweck
explicitly credited me for highlighting this
issue, noting that I "recognised, before we
did, that many educators were misunderstanding
the growth mindset or implementing it in
ineffective ways" (Dweck, 2016). John Rives
and I conceptualised and co-developed the
Mindset Profiler, a validated assessment tool
created in collaboration with researchers Mary
Murphy and Katie Mueks, under the guidance of
Professor Carol Dweck. This tool helps
individuals, teams, and organisations identify
and manage specific "fixed mindset triggers,"
such as feedback, setbacks, comfort zones, and
challenges, thereby fostering a resilient and
persistent growth mindset. (Murphy &
Yeager, 2024). Our work integrates
neuroscience, behavioural science, clinical
psychology, cognitive development and further
demonstrates how fixed mindset triggers
activate emotional threat responses in the
brain, and our interventions help people
consciously engage courage and resilience
responses (Mackie, 2021; Murphy, 2024).
Through my ongoing collaboration with
Professor Dweck, Mary Murphy, David Yeager,
and other thought leaders, my work continues
to shape educational and organisational
policies. My approach emphasises authentic
practice and systemic support rather than
superficial slogans, and my contributions have
been pivotal in shifting the mindset discourse
from theoretical concepts to sustainable,
evidence-based practices, impacting educators,
leaders, and organisations globally (Memari et
al., 2024; Aus et al., 2021; Yeager et al.,
2022). John Rives, prior to co-founding GMI,
served as the CEO of one of Australia's top 50
private companies, bringing over 20 years of
experience in the service industry. With his
deep knowledge and expertise in AI, Customer
Experience, System Development, and Growth, he
continues to consult and assist Governments
and Organisations with complex integration
challenges. Together, John and I have built
the Growth Mindset Institute into a global
leader in mindset assessment, program design,
and delivery. Our combined efforts continue to
influence educational and organisational
practices worldwide, promoting authentic
growth mindset cultures that lead to
meaningful and sustainable change. Some of our
clients include Microsoft, JDE Coffee, Johnson
& Johnson, AWS, Westpac, NUBS, Medtronic,
Allianz, Kemin, Conagra, Procter & Gamble,
and RGA.
