About

I am an internationally recognized researcher of air quality and an advocate for clean air. I currently hold a position as a Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Atmospheric Chemistry and an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Alberta, Canada. I lead a research team and am engaged in a number of research projects related to air quality, environmental public health, and global climate. **Impact of every-day consumer products on respiratory health** Our team has pioneered research projects that unraveled air pollution arising from household and every-day products, including ultrasonic humidifiers, stage fog machines, and e-cigarettes. **Monitoring air pollutants in poultry facilities** Our team has worked with producers of table eggs and broiler hatching eggs to monitor prominent air pollutants (dust, ammonia, and carbon dioxide) in indoor poultry facilities. **Danger of fire smoke** Our team measures and quantifies the emissions of air pollutants arising from Canadian wildfires, crop residues in India, and household biofuels. We also study how wildfire smoke affects the outdoor and indoor air quality. **Community-based air quality research** My team has applied low-cost air quality sensor networks in the community to deliver air quality data to those who are in need. We deployed sensors in public buildings to study how wildfire smoke infiltrated indoors. We deployed sensors in households with asthmatic children to understand how indoor air quality affected their health.
