Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences, providing leadership during a period covering sabbatical leave.
Professor, Lecturer & Researcher / January, 1986 — December
Developed and implemented new courses in neuroscience, physiology, cell biology, and developmental biology for medical, dental, and science students. Served as Degree Coordinator for BSc Honours Programmes (1991-1998), Departmental Examinations Officer (1991-1998), and Chair of School Examinations Board (1998-2015). Created Joint PhD with Tongji University Shanghai (2013-Present). Supervised fifteen successful PhD students and numerous postdoctoral fellows. Provided expertise in primary tissue culture, electric field application to cells, confocal microscopy, and immunocytochemistry. Secured continuous external funding for over 35 years.
Wellcome Trust University Award Lecturer / January, 1988 — December, 1993
Conducted research on nerve growth, filopodia, signal transduction mechanisms, and nerve branching, publishing seminal back-to-back papers.
MRC Senior Postdoctoral Fellow / January, 1986 — December, 1988
Independently funded research demonstrating that nerve retraction and re-growth depend on electric field polarity, with implications for spinal cord injury treatment.
University of Edinburgh
Beit Memorial Research Fellow / January, 1983 — December, 1986
Independent postdoctoral research establishing muscle cells produce chemoattractants and determining dynamics of filopodia on neuronal growth cones. Also involved in planning and presenting lectures at honors level and leading tutorial sessions for medical and dental students.
University of Otago, Department of Physiology
New Zealand MRC Senior Fellow / January, 1980 — December, 1983
Postdoctoral research on motoneurone death in mammalian embryos. Taught endocrinology and reproductive physiology courses, created and coordinated curricula, and managed lab sessions.
Universities of Colorado and Connecticut
