About

My expertise field of research and teaching specialty is in fabric design and formation, technical textile design, and physical-mechanical properties of fibers and fibrous assemblies. Prior to joining NC State, the majority of my industry research and development work was in technical textile design which led me to develop a deep understanding of the construction-property relationships of textile structures and products. Leveraging my industry experience has enabled me to apply my knowledge and expertise to a broad spectrum of emerging research topics related to functional and interactive textile solutions, advanced materials and fabrication technologies, digital design and simulation technologies to bridge digital communications, product design practices, materials and smart technologies. I have strong synergies between these research areas and continue my research focus centered on textile material properties involving relationships between design, structure, performance, and applications. My teaching and mentoring philosophy integrates extensive industry experience with academic instruction to prepare students as innovative leaders in the global textile and apparel industries. I teach a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses spanning the textile value chain from foundational science to advanced product development using adaptive, hands-on, and research-based approaches. By linking undergraduate instruction with graduate-level innovation, I foster continuity and depth in learning. Ongoing engagement with industry partners ensures my curriculum remains relevant, applied, and aligned with current market trends. Beyond teaching, I mentor students through research advising and professional development, securing grants to expand experiential opportunities and guiding over 20 graduate theses and dissertations. This integrated approach equips students with technical mastery, critical thinking, and industry-ready skills for academic and professional leadership. My research focuses on the design, manufacture, and performance of textile materials with an emphasis on health, sustainability, and advanced applications. Building on industry experience in healthcare and functional textiles, my academic program bridges materials science, design, and biomedical applications to develop innovations that enhance well-being and environmental health. Current projects explore smart textiles, fiber-reinforced composites, and 3D printing of multifunctional materials, supported by over $6.3 million in competitive funding from agencies such as DoD SBIR and NASA STTR programs. My work, widely published in high-impact journals and cited in industry reports, integrates fundamental science with applied engineering to advance smart, sustainable solutions for healthcare, consumer, and industrial sectors. Through strong collaborations with industry, I create opportunities for student involvement in cutting-edge research while aligning with national innovation priorities. Recognized internationally for research excellence and leadership, I have received honors including NC State's University Faculty Scholar award (2024-2025) and the Hind Rattan Award (2024). I maintain strong national and international industry collaborations that support applied research, knowledge transfer, and student development. One of the most consistent and impactful platforms for industry engagement is my work with Cotton Incorporated's Importer Support Program (ISP). Through this initiative, I deliver advanced textile workshops to approximately 200-250 industry professionals annually. The workshops I lead cover topics including Denim Manufacturing and Finishing, Textile Fundamentals, Knit Woven Fabric Analysis, Color Comments and Lab Dips, Value Engineering, and Understanding Fabric and Product Defects. These engagements keep me at the forefront of industry needs and emerging trends, allowing me to translate this knowledge directly into student instruction, curriculum development, and real-world research questions. The ISP program also fosters invaluable connections that have led to collaborative research and experiential learning opportunities for students. In addition to the ISP, I have created and led specialized technical workshops for other industry partners-efforts that have generated external funding, supported graduate student stipends, and provided students with authentic exposure to industry expectations and technologies.
