Chloe Wasendorf, Ph.D

Assistant Professor with research in microbial genomics and science education

About

Chloe Wasendorf is a highly educated and experienced microbiologist with a passion for studying and understanding the microscopic world. She earned her Ph.D in Microbiology from Iowa State University in 2022, after completing her undergraduate studies with a Bachelor's degree in Animal Science in 2013. Throughout her academic journey, Chloe has dedicated herself to learning about the intricate processes and functions of microorganisms, and how they impact our world. One side of her research focused on studying the interactions between microbes and their environment, and how bacteriophage can be used for beneficial purposes such as in agriculture, medicine, and environmental remediation. Another side of her research focused on developing concepts inventory in a variety of Biology topics, including mutations, pedigrees, and others. Concept inventories help us better understand whether students are learning the correct concepts surrounding a certain topic. After completing her Ph.D, Chloe joined the faculty at Alfred University as an Assistant Professor in the Biology and Biochemistry department. Here, she continues to share her knowledge and passion for microbiology with her students, while also conducting research in microbiomes and science pedagogy. Chloe's expertise in microbiology has led to publications in both biological sciences and education journals. Her teaching topics range from introductory biology, to upper level genomics, microbiology, and systems courses. Authentic research experiences with undergraduates and the SEA PHAGES program are one of Chloe's favorite part of her job. She is committed to providing active learning and inclusive environments.
