Gender and technology education

About

I am a Technology teacher and PhD candidate investigating gender bias and participation patterns in technology education in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a particular focus on materials technology subjects in secondary schools. My research explores how curriculum structures, classroom practices, and sociocultural norms shape young people’s experiences in technology subjects — and how more equitable, mana-enhancing learning environments can be cultivated. My work brings together perspectives from gender studies, technology education, and sociocultural theory, and is grounded in strong relationships with teachers, students, and school communities. I have presented at NZARE and TENZ, I am published in the New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies and I have an article accepted for publication in the International Journal of Technology and Design Education in 2026, contributing to global conversations about equity and curriculum design in technology education. I am passionate about supporting kaiako and departments to design inclusive, future-focused technology learning that reflects diverse identities, encourages creativity, and promotes meaningful participation for all students. Areas of interest include: • Gender equity in technology/STEM education • Materials & textiles technology • Technology curriculum design • Classroom observation & case study methodology • Participatory and culturally responsive pedagogies • Assessment in technology education Alongside my research, I work as an Adjunct Lecturer at Open Polytechnic and as an NZQA Contract Moderator in Technology. I bring more almost a decade of experience as a technology educator in both teaching and middle management roles. I welcome collaboration, kōrero, and opportunities to connect with others working in education research, curriculum design, and equity in schooling.
