Dr. Scannapieco is a pioneer in studies connecting oral
and systemic diseases, including respiratory diseases such
as pneumonia and COPD, diabetes and oral cancer. Dr.
Scannapieco has served on the UB faculty since 1991 and
served as the Chair of the Department of Oral Biology from
2004 through 2022. Over the course of his career, he has
edited several books and journal supplements and published
more than 190 research articles and book chapters. He has
received several awards, among these, promotion to SUNY
Distinguished Professor, Distinguished Scientist Award in
Oral Biology from the International Association for Dental
Research, and Distinguished Scientist Awards in Oral
Biology and Geriatric Oral Research from the International
Association for Dental Research, the Irwin D. Mandel

Association for Dental Research, the Dean’s Award and
Commencement Speaker from the University at Buffalo School
of Dental Medicine, and the Doctor Honoris Causa from the
